Kingley Vale in West Sussex near Chichester is an ancient wood full of fascinatingly twisted veteran yew trees. Some are amongst the oldest living things in the country. A trail leads you through the woodland and onto the chalk grassland. It’s a beautiful walk, full of variety and is the habitat of many different birds and butterflies. We visited on a bleak and misty afternoon in January so wildlife was scarce but were lucky to occasionally see glimpses of sunlight through the dank and dark woods making it even more mysterious.
